ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION

This is a précis of the Articles only – the full document may be viewed at or requested from the Secretary.

 

1. The objects for which the Association is established are:

 

(a) Advance the scientific study and professional practice of sex education, counselling and therapy and to enhance the contribution of sex educators, counsellors and therapists to the promotion of the public welfare by encouraging the development of all branches of sex education, counselling and therapy: promoting and improving research in education, counselling and therapy; promoting high standards of professional ethics, competence, conduct, education, qualification and achievement amongst sex educators, counsellors and therapists: promoting the dissemination of knowledge and thought on sex education, counselling and therapy through meetings, lectures, professional contacts, reports, papers, discussions and publications: advancing scientific interest and inquiry into sex education counselling and therapy and all related areas of knowledge and practice.

 

(b) To arrange, provide for, o join in arranging and providing for the holding of conferences, national and international exhibitions, business and social meetings, lectures, classes and discussions on subjects of general and special interest to persons interested in sex education, counselling and therapy and also the conduct and publication of any experiments relevant to research in these fields.

 

(c) To make a grant of money or to lend monies at or without interest out of the funds of the Association for the furtherance of any of the purposes of the Association.

(d) To print, publish and circulate, gratuitously or otherwise, and to sell, lend, issue and distribute, books, pamphlets, leaflets or communications made to the Association, or documents relating to sex education, counselling or therapy, and any reports of the proceedings and accounts of the Association, and for this purpose to cause translations to be mad of any such papers, treatise or communications as shall be in a foreign language, and to illustrate any of the publications as the Association may think expedient in connection with the objects of the Association or any of them.

 

(e) To keep a register of members, their qualifications and appointments and particulars of the professional experience generally.

 

(f) To promote honourable practice and suppress malpractice by and among sex educators, counsellors and therapists, to settle all questions and decide disputes, questions of practice and questions of professional usage, etiquette and courtesy referred to the Association.

 

 

MEMBERSHIP

2. The Association shall consist of:

(i) Full Members – Professional

(ii) Associate Members – Semi - Professional

(iii) General Membership – Bona Fide Interest

(iv) Student Membership – Studying toward Full Membership.

(v) Such other grades of membership as may be determined from time to time by the Association in general meeting.

 

All of whom shall be members. Only the names of Members shall be entered in the Register of Members to be kept pursuant to the act and the expression Members in these Articles means the Members whose names are so entered. Other persons may be admitted from time to time to the Association as prescribed by the By-Laws, but they will not be Members.

 

3. Every applicant for membership of the Association shall be proposed by one and seconded by another member of the Association to both of whom the applicant shall be personally known. The application for membership shall be made in writing, signed by the applicant and his proposer and seconder and shall be in such form as the Executive Committee from time to time prescribes.

 

4. When an applicant has been accepted for membership the Secretary shall for with send to the applicant written notice of his acceptance and a request for payment of his entrance fee and first annual subscription. Upon payment of his entrance fee and first annual subscription the applicant shall become a member of the Association, provided nevertheless that if such payment be not made within two calendar months after the date of the notice, Executive Committee may in its discretion cancel its acceptance of the applicant for membership of the Association.

 

5. The rights and privileges of every member shall be personal to himself and shall not be transferable.

 

 

EXPULSION AND RESIGNATION

6. If the subscription of a member shall remain for a period of two calendar months after it becomes due then the member may after notice of the default shall have been sent to him by the Secretary or Honorary Treasurer be debarred by resolution of the Executive Committee from the Register of Members provided that the Executive Committee may reinstate the member and restore his name to the Register on payment of all arrears of the Executive Committee thanks fit to do so.

 

GENERAL MEETINGS

7. An annual general meeting of the Association shall be held in accordance with the provisions of the Act. All general meetings, other than the Annual General Meetings, shall be called Extraordinary general meetings.

 

8. No business shall be transacted at any general meeting unless a quorum of members is present at the times when the meeting proceeds to business. Save as herein otherwise provided, five members present in person shall be a quorum. For the purpose of these articles member includes a person attending as a proxy.

 

9. The instrument appointing a proxy shall be in writing under the hand of the appointer or of his attorney duly authorised in writing. The instrument appointing a proxy shall be deemed to confer authority to demand or join in demanding a poll. A member shall be deemed to confer authority to demand or join in demanding a poll. A member shall be entitled to instruct his proxy to vote in favour of or against any proposed resolution. Unless otherwise instructed the poxy may vote as he thinks fit.

 

10. The Executive Committee may appoint one or more advisory boards consisting of such member or members of the Executive Committee as the Executive Committee thinks fit. Such advisory board shall act in an advisory capacity only. They shall conform to any regulations that may be imposed by the Executive Committee and subject thereto shall have power to co-opt any member or members of the Association and all members of such advisory boards shall have one vote.
